About The Hidden Sport
The Hidden Sport is an award-winning mini-documentary that brings long-overdue attention to the unmatched precision, passion, and power of the Southern University Human Jukebox—an HBCU band that is more than halftime entertainment; it’s the heartbeat of culture, discipline, and Black excellence. This film reveals the behind-the-scenes grind, sacrifice, and spirit that often go unseen but deserve to be in the spotlight. It also challenges perceptions by recognizing band students as athletes in their own right, highlighting the intense physicality and dedication required to perform at such a high level.
Directed by Loren Sullivan and executive produced by Ashley Lovelace, alongside journalists and writers Eric White and Sydney Cuillier, with production assistance from Verbon Muhammad, Jr., and mentorship by Garrett Edgerson, this team has crafted a powerful narrative that celebrates underrepresented voices.
What began as a film has evolved into a movement. The Hidden Sport team is committed to expanding the mission by investing in the next generation of creatives at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Through scholarships, workshops, and new media projects, they aim to support students pursuing the arts and uplift the often-overlooked stories that shape the history and legacy of HBCUs. Because every beat, every step, and every story matters—and it’s time the world hears them all.
